ARCHITECTURE / STUDIO

Naoto Fukasawa’s studio is nestled beside a river, where in spring, the view outside the window is gently tinted with blooming cherry blossoms. The building features a minimalist white façade and clean-lined windows, standing quietly within a narrow alley—unassuming, yet with a strong sense of presence. The interior continues Fukasawa’s signature philosophy: stripping away excess decoration so that objects and space naturally integrate into everyday life. The palette is composed of black, white, and brown tones, paired with wooden furniture and metal lighting to create a calm yet inviting atmosphere. In the dining area sits his own Hiroshima High Chair—understated, yet rich in texture and design. The most striking element is the black spiral staircase that winds upward like a ribbon from the basement to the second floor. Visually dramatic, it also reflects his concept of “design without thought,” creating an intuitive flow through the space. Here, design doesn’t speak loudly—it simply exists, like air: natural, essential, and quietly ever-present.

This simple, square, clean, and orderly window arrangement is one of my favorite designs.

Naoto Fukasawa’s renowned work, the “Hiroshima Chair,” continues his tradition of subtractive design, which emphasizes the user’s intuition. This design approach restores the essence of a simple wooden chair.

Multiple windows, neatly arranged to follow the path of the sunlight, bring warm afternoon light into the room, keeping it bright until nightfall, even without turning on the lights.

Step outside your door to see a creek flanked by beautiful cherry trees, offering a serene and picturesque view both from your doorstep and through the windows.

The main vision of the entire space is a beautiful spiral staircase like a ribbon. The beautiful curves dilute the cold feeling of steel.
